The Starstruck Report- 7/09/10 Notes.
Hello friends and welcome to another edition of the Starstruck Report. It was a very warm week all week and Friday night wasn't much different. We were in the middle of a cool spell and it had been raining in nearby Amelia County for most of the evening. Therefore, the track went out of their way to get the show off quickly. This was one of the fastest and smoothest shows I have seen at Southside Speedway in a long time. Nothing like the fear of rain to make things move. If the summaries seem short this week, there was very few cautions in all of the races. For those of you new to the Starstruck Report, keep in mind that Street Stock is the only division that caution laps count.
Ucar (25 laps): Corey Lawrence (6) started this race on the pole. Rusty Bennett took the lead on lap 4. Frank Silva (91) took the lead the following lap. Jonathan Doane (21) took his car in the pits during that lap. On lap 11, David Gonce (09) took his car in the pits. Lap 15, Jason Marshall (94) was spun by Mike Chapman (18). If Chapman (18) hadn't gone in the pits immediately, he would have been blackflagged. But he was warned before he went back on the track. The race restarted and Silva (91) took the inside and held off Bennett (92) for a slight lead for a couple of laps. Bennett (92) would take the lead on lap 17 but Silva regained it the next lap. Silva (91) would hang on for the win. 1. Frank Silva (91) 2. Jamie Hite (12) 3. Rusty Bennett (92) 4. David Kerns (78) 5. Austin Dodge (87) 6. Brad Sayler (8) 7. Shawn Hendricks(44) 8. Jason Marshall (94) 9. Tony Mills (61) 10. Andrew Condrey (36) 11. Corey Lawrence (6) 12. Mike Chapman (18) 13. Charlie Simons (3) 14. David Gonce (09) 15. Jonathan Doane (21)
Grand Stock (50 laps): Shawn Hopkins (84) had the fastest lap. Chris Hott (01) started this race on the pole on the redraw. Hott (01) got loose on the very first lap and lost the lead to Mark Simpson (36). Lap 2, Kevin Wilson (47) was blackflagged. On lap 11, Tommy Tatum (62) took the lead. James Overton (15) spun in turn 2 and brought out the only caution in this race. On the restart, Tatum (62) retained his lead by lining up on the inside and holding off Brian Mislivy (3). Tatum (62) would hold on to take the checkered flag. 1. Tommy Tatum (62) 2. Mark Simpson (36) 3. Brian Myslivy (3) 4. Shawn Hopkins (84) 5. Daniel Shelton (27) 6. Chris Hott (01) 7. J. D. Eversole (98) 8. Woody Ellington (11) 9. Kevin Wilson (47) 10 Donnie Newman (69) 11. James Overman (15)
Modified (75 laps): Thomas Stinson (4) was the fastest in qualifying. However, Alan Purser (41) would win the pole in the redraw. This only caution in this race came out lap 2 when Chris Hoylman (37) spun in the front stretch. Purser (41) lined up on the inside for the restart and held off Rusty Wood (9) initially. R. Wood (9) would take the lead on lap 14. Around lap 29, Michael Johnson (38) went in the pits. Thomas Stinson (4) took the lead on lap 33. M. Johnson (38) went in the pits again around lap 59. For laps 67and 68, Hunter Slayton (77) and Greg Fernandez (34) went in the pits and retired from the race. Stinson (4) would hold on for the win. Note: the modified results are listed on the Southside Speedway page as unofficial as of press time. 1. Thomas Stinson (4) 2. Mike Rudy (8) 3. Chris Johnson (36) 4. Rusty Wood (9) 5. Ryan Wilbourne (21) 6. Kyle Wood (19) 7. Alan Purser (41) 8. Chris Hoylman (37) 9. Stacey Wilbourne (23) 10. Greg Fernandez (34) 11. Hunter Slayton (77) 12. Michael Johnson (38)
Champ Karts (20 laps): The whole race was clean and green. Ricky Gum (28) started off on the pole for this race. Lap 3, Brad Davis (18) took the lead. Lap 11, Kenny Miller (4) took his kart in the pits when he went off the pace. During the last two laps, B. Davis (18) held off a strong challenge from Buzz Moore (11) to take the win. Great side by side racing on the last two laps. 1. Brad Davis (18) 2. Buzz Moore (11) 3. J. D. Eversole (98) 4. David Emory (22) 5. Cameron Wood (21) 6. Hunter Ashworth (17) 7. Randy Emory (00) 8. Street Stock (50 laps): Justin Groome (8) started this race on the pole. For the record, only two cautions and a very clean race. Lap 3, Justin Dunkum (13) went in the pits. The first caution came out lap 7 when Ethan Ayers (69) spun in turn 2. Paul Clemons (29) had also spun in the backstretch. From what I can tell, separate incidents. Chris Bryant (6) and Chris Kantzler (01) went in the pits during this caution. The race restarted on lap 10 and J. Groome (8) lined up on the inside and retained his lead by holding off Gary Turner (17). Lap 14, Jesse Hendricks (38) went in the pits. Mike Ganoe (82) took the lead on lap 17. Chris Bryant (6) went in the pits again around lap 26. The second and final caution came out on lap 32, when Dan Rogers (33) wrecked in the backstretch and Chris Kantzler (01) also hit hard in turn 3. This lead to the race being red flagged at lap 34. James Loving (0) was the lucky dog for this caution. Ganoe (82) took the inside for the restart on lap 36 and held off James Groome (31). Around lap 38, Robbie Groome (79) spun but no caution.R Groome (79) would take his car in the pits around lap 43. Ganoe (82) would hold on to win. 1. Mike Ganoe (82) 2. Brian Smith (06) 3. Ricky Stotler (92) 4. Gary Turner (17) 5. Justin Groome (8) 6. Paul Clemons (29) 7. Jason Beck (41) 8. Ethan Ayers (69) 9. Jamie Neely (15) 10. James Loving (0) 11. Michael Sutphin (25) 12. James Grooms (31) (DQ)
Since the races were very clean and green, some of the awards are a little tougher to give out this week.
Performances of the week: Yes, this will be a tie this week. Frank Silva (Ucar 91) and Brad Davis (18) had to have strong laps of side by side racing to retain their leads and claim their wins. This truly was great racing by both of these drivers.
Tough Luck Ucar: Mike Chapman (18) gets the nod this week. He went into this race as points leader. However, due to the bad finish and caution with Jason Marshall (94), he now trails David Kerns (78) by 20 points.
Tough Luck Grand Stock: James Overton (15) gets the nod this week. He drew the only real caution in this division and finished dead last as a result.
Tough Luck Modifieds: This one was hard but Hunter Slayton (77) and Greg Fernandez (34) had the only DNF's in the race.
Tough Luck Champ Karts: Another tough one. However, Kenny Miller (4) was the only kart I could determine had a DNF. Otherwise, it would have been Stan Holmes (01) and Ricky Gum (28) for losing 10 positions since the start of the race.
Tough Luck Street Stock: This week, Dan Rogers (33) gets the nod. During his wreck, he had a strange occurance. The tire itself came off the car but the rim managed to stay on and intact.
New Midweek section: Drivers, this is your chance to tell a story. I am thinking of adding a voice of the drivers section to the midweek column exclusively at facebook. In this, the drivers can tell what they like when they are not racing, their favorite races or recent incidents on the track. The only thing I ask, is to remember that the Starstruck Report is a family column and to keep it clean for all ages. Yes, I know emotion gets involved in racing and can be expressed several ways. Also, if one driver makes a charge at another driver, then I will offer that driver a chance to respond to the matter. Afterall, this is about being fair journalism. Voice of the drivers submissions can be sent to larrystarstruck@yahoo.com or message me on facbook.
Looking ahead: On facebook, we will be looking at the points races. Friday July 16 has three divisions and 5 races. Twin 50's for Late Models and Twin 30's for Grand Stock. The Champ Karts will also see action. Yes, if a driver has a big night in these divisions, it can be like a double points night. That's all for now, I will see you at the races.
