Had an oil pressure drop today. Seems to only happen under high load or on take off, and is intermittent. The pressure usually runs around 50-55 (on an "auto meter" gage). Under high load the pressure will all of a sudden drop from the norm to about 20, just for a second, then spike back up. Also sometimes during acceleration from 1st gear the pressure will rise during take off, then quickly drop when it reaches about 45, basically just b4 shifting to 2nd gear.Engine is a 383 stroker Chevy. Don`t consider myself a big car guy by any stretch so any help is greatly appreciated. Juicy
check you engine oil level... add a quart and see if it still happens...if you have the drain plug out.. fish around thru the drain plug hole and verify the oil pickup screen is still attached to the pump.. that its not too close to the pan bottom...you did not say if you have a PCV system hooked up.... or a crankcase evacuation system.. if you *** do you have a breather hooked up with the PCV system.. or with the evacuation system... feet on the pickup screen to prevent the oil pan from covering the pickup screen completely.. but also some kind of device to hold the pickup in place in the pump.. i have a friend with a honda drag car... he put on the crankcase evacuation system and pulled in the aux shaft seal and the rear main seal.. i had to find him flanged versions to fit his motor.. then glued them in with black super weather strip to hold them in place.. i proved he had an issue by using one of the fuel pump pressure tester gauges that reads from 15 pounds of pressure to 30 inches of vacuum.. he had so much vacuum in the pan it was crushing his gaskets also.. he converted to one of the electric smog pumps from a gm car.. that he flips on as he lights the first staging light.. giving it a chance to build vacuum in the pan..

was worried it will compromise the life of the crank assembly?? you should be... adding a quart is ONLY a TESTinspecting the oil pump pickup thru the drain hole is another easy test..identifying what is causing this... if the windage tray is not working properly..if the oil pan baffles are not working properly.. if the pump its self is failing.. is the oil filter coming apart and blocking passages???if you are running a fairly late model block... is the oil pressure relief valve under the oil filter going bad... or hung open..or is it something strange... like your electrical oil pressure gauge loosing the ground connection with the block because of a loose or missing ground strap between the engine and the firewall... what.. yea...could be... depending if you are running solid motor mounts or rubber ones...
it would be nice to know a LOT more about your engine... oiling system.. racing class ...so people might give you even better an answer..
